- Myers’ resilience and work ethic, instilled by his family, have been key factors in his professional turnaround.
Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Tobias Myers credits his family, especially his mother Angela, for his remarkable turnaround and success in Major League Baseball.
On a cool October evening at American Family Field, Tobias Myers delivered a stellar performance in Game 3 of the National League wild-card series against the New York Mets.
As he walked off the mound after five shutout innings, the 26-year-old right-hander knew he’d find no critique waiting on his phone.
His biggest fan and toughest critic—his mother, Angela—was in the stands, witnessing her son’s magnum opus firsthand.
“She only texts me when she’s watching on TV,” Myers explained with a smile.
It’s become a ritual for the young pitcher to check his phone post-game, often finding succinct but emphatic notes from his mother, usually centered around throwing more strikes.
A Mother’s Tough Love
Angela Myers’ influence on her son’s career goes beyond game-day texts.
Following a disastrous 2022 season that saw Tobias struggle in the minor leagues and get designated for assignment three times, it was Angela who helped kickstart his comeback.
“My mom was telling me, ‘You should go try to find a job,'” Myers recalled. “You know how parents are. ‘You sure you should be working out? You should be trying to get a job.'”
This tough love and support from his fiancée, Leah, and his agent pushed Myers to rediscover his passion and potential on the mound.
Family-Fueled Resilience
Myers’ journey to becoming a key player for the Brewers is a testament to his resilience, a quality he attributes to his upbringing.
While there’s little mention of his father in public discussions, the impact of his mother’s dedication is clear.
Angela Myers, described as a religious woman and devoted mother, has been a constant presence in Tobias’ life.
Her love for cooking, which she shares on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok, hints at the nurturing environment she’s provided for her children.
A Perfect Fit in Milwaukee
The Brewers’ approach to Myers’ development has aligned perfectly with his family’s values. Pitching coach Chris Hook praised Myers’ work ethic and preparation, calling his makeup “off the charts.”
“He’s got a maturity to him,” Hook noted. “He’s got some resilience. He’s been punched in the face. All of these things… Tobias has that experience, and it’s beneficial.”
This resilience was on full display as Myers transformed from a struggling minor leaguer in 2022 to a pitcher with a 3.00 ERA in 27 games for the Brewers in 2023.
