CBS News Revamps “Evening News” With John Dickerson As New Anchor

Highlights
  • John Dickerson is set to become an anchor of the CBS Evening News in 2025.
  • CBS plans to overhaul the format, focusing on in-depth reporting and breaking news.
  • The show will return to New York City with a new team, including co-anchor Maurice DuBois.

CBS News is gearing up for a major shake-up of its flagship “CBS Evening News” program, with veteran journalist John Dickerson taking the helm as one of the new anchors in 2025.

This move comes as part of a broader strategy to revitalize the long-running news broadcast and recapture viewer interest in an increasingly competitive media landscape.

Dickerson, currently the anchor of “The CBS Daily Report” and a prominent figure in political coverage, brings a wealth of experience to his new role.

His impressive resume includes stints as moderator of “Face the Nation,” co-host of “CBS This Morning,” and correspondent for “60 Minutes.”

Bill Owens, executive producer of “60 Minutes,” will oversee the reimagined “Evening News.”

He aims to strip away the clutter and focus on substantive reporting.

“We are not going to be dealing with the things we think people might want to see, and we are going to be about real serious reporting,” Owens stated.

The new format will feature:

  • Co-anchors John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois
  • Chief weathercaster Lonnie Quinn
  • Washington-based “Face The Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan
  • Regular appearances by “60 Minutes” correspondents

Wendy McMahon, president and CEO of CBS news stations and syndication businesses, emphasized the network’s commitment to the program.

“I have a desire to win,” she said. “What part of this suggests cuts or less ambition or less commitment?”

The revamped “Evening News” will return to New York City after several years in Washington, D.C. This move aligns with CBS’s strategy to integrate its national news team more closely with local station journalists.

While CBS faces an uphill battle in the ratings – currently trailing both ABC and NBC in evening news viewership – the network hopes this bold reimagining will attract a new generation of viewers.
