Born to Anne Elizabeth and Edward Brinkley, Douglas Brinkley’s journey to becoming a celebrated historian began with a family deeply rooted in education and American values.

The Story Of His Parents

Anne Elizabeth, a New Jersey native, met her future husband Edward A. Brinkley while attending Clarion State Teachers College in Pennsylvania.

The couple married on June 11, 1955, setting the stage for a life filled with adventure and academic pursuits.

Edward Brinkley, a Korean War veteran, worked as a personnel manager at Owens-Illinois, while Anne taught high school English in Clarion.

Their family grew with the birth of their first child, Leslie, Douglas’ elder sister, in 1958.

The Brinkleys’ adventurous spirit led them to Valencia, Venezuela, before settling in Atlanta, Georgia, where Douglas was born in 1960.

Douglas Brinkley recalls:

“My mother and father were teachers. My dad went into business, but my mom was an English teacher at the high school I was at.”

In 1968, the Brinkley family moved to Perrysburg, Ohio, a place that would significantly impact young Douglas’s upbringing.

Anne’s passion for education flourished here, as she taught British Literature and English at Perrysburg High School for over a decade.

Her dedication earned her the title of Teacher of the Year and Head of the English Department.

Nurturing A Love For History And Nature

Doug’s parents instilled in him a deep appreciation for wild places, national parks, and the rich history of conservation in the United States.

This early exposure would later influence his career as a historian specializing in conservation and presidential history.

After their children graduated from college, Anne and Edward moved to Laguna Niguel, California in 1986.

Anne retired from teaching, embracing the coastal lifestyle and indulging in frequent trips to Las Vegas.

Sadly, she passed away on February 10, 2017, due to heart failure, leaving behind a legacy of education and family values that continue to inspire her son’s work.
