European Space Agency live-streams from Mars!

The European Space Agency (ESA) has successfully conducted the first-ever video live stream from Mars.

The ESA’s Mars Express spacecraft hovering above the red planet beamed the video feed, which reached Earth, nearly 300 million kilometers away,  in around 17 minutes.

For each picture to reach Earth it took nearly 17 minutes and another 1 minute to get through the ground stations.

The pictures were captured by the Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC) onboard Mars Express, which acts as a webcam.

This is the first time that a public viewing of near-instant pictures from the red planet was conducted. A commentator on ESA’s live stream said, “Ooh, here it is, this is the first image from Mars and it is the most live you will ever get unless you travel to the red planet. This is Mars 16 minutes ago.”  The livestreaming was held at 9.15 pm IST on June 2.

The transmission of live stream was disrupted at times by rainy weather at the deep space-relay antenna in Spain.

Most of the pictures taken by the spacecraft are gathered during times when it does not have direct contact with Earth.
