Rising indie star Gigi Perez’s latest single, “Fable,” isn’t just another song.
It’s a deeply personal tribute to her late sister Celene, whose voice echoes through the track in a touching voicemail recording:
“Hey princess, it’s Celi, I’m just calling you to wish you luck on your performance at the café.”
Released on October 25, 2024, “Fable” emerged after Perez’s summer breakthrough hit “Sailor Song” cracked Billboard’s Top 40.
The new track, which debuted in the Top 10 of Genius chart, carries profound meaning – its title references the final song Celene performed before her untimely passing in 2020.
“My door happened to be open, and my little sister walks by and says, Oh, Gigi, that’s really awesome,” Perez recalled about creating the song with her younger sister Bella, whose harmonies feature prominently on the track.
The three Perez sisters grew up in Hackensack, New Jersey, where parents Lissy and Javi, a Cuban luxury real estate broker, nurtured their creative spirits.
Born in 2000, Gigi looked up to Celene (born in 1998) while helping guide her youngest sister, Bella, through their shared passion for music.
The Journey Through Grief
Gigi’s artistic evolution is deeply intertwined with her loss.
Her debut EP, “How to Catch a Falling Knife,” explores the raw emotions of losing Celene, while “Fable” dives deeper into questions of spirituality and eternal connection:
“Stars blink like my sister’s eyes… I dream of eternal life” – Lyrics from “Fable”
On what would have been Celene’s 25th birthday, Gigi spent the day immersed in old videos, particularly cherishing a recording of 16-year-old Celene performing “Still Dream” – a testament to her Broadway aspirations.
