Lance Franklin puts contract talks on hold with Sydney Swans until end of season

It has also been pointed out Franklin is still one of the game’s biggest drawcards.

Swans chief executive Tom Harley has maintained that contract negotiations with Franklin were progressing well.

Franklin, an eight-time All Australian, earlier this year became just the sixth player in AFL/VFL history to kick 1000 goals.

According to a Nine report in Brisbane on Thursday, Franklin’s management had entered into discussions with the Brisbane Lions, but the Lions denied this. The Swans maintain there was no substance to the report.

Franklin’s wife Jesinta, who grew up on the Gold Coast, has said she would like to live closer to her family. The couple own a luxury beachside apartment in Queensland.

Franklin, 35, has kicked 41 goals in 17 matches this season and commentary about his future has swirled this season.

The Swans are embedded in the top eight and fighting for a top-four spot, with 13 wins this season.

They have also been linked to Dustin Martin, the injured Richmond superstar who, despite having two years left on his contract, may have played his last game for the Tigers. However, the Swans have ruled out making a play for Magpie Jordan De Goey, who is seeking a new contract.

Magpies coach Craig McRae said on Friday night he wants De Goey, a free agent, to stay.

“He’s a free agent (and) that’s his right to explore his options,” he said.

“I speak authentically. I’d love Jordan (De Goey) to stay. I’m aware that’s going to create a headline but we live in the moment and let Jordy keep being himself around our environment and make us better.”
