After nearly two decades of helping Tampa Bay residents start their days with accurate weather forecasts, WFLA meteorologist Leigh Spann has announced her retirement.
The beloved weather expert, who joined the station in September 2007, will bid farewell to viewers this November, marking the end of an era in local television.
A Career Spanning Major Milestones
Leigh Spann’s tenure at WFLA began during a summer of significant events.
As she stepped into her role, the first iPhone was released in the U.S., Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron’s home run record, and Bob Barker hosted his final episode of “The Price is Right.”
Through it all, Spann has been a constant presence for Tampa Bay viewers, tracking everything from sunny skies and record heat to afternoon thunderstorms and numerous tropical systems.
Known for her enthusiasm both on and off-camera, she has made a lasting impact beyond her weather reports.
As an avid runner, she hosts a digital show called “Run for Fun,” combining her meteorological expertise with her love for outdoor activities.
This passion has resonated with viewers and colleagues alike.
A Celebration Of Service
To commemorate Leigh Spann’s significant contributions, WFLA is organizing a special “Run for Fun 5K” event.
Set for Sunday, October 20, 2024, at Al Lopez Park, the race kicks off at 8 a.m.
The timed 3.1-mile course offers a mostly shaded route, with finishers receiving a t-shirt and medal.
Both runners and walkers are invited to join this celebration of Spann’s career.
Personal Life And Future Plans
A proud University of Georgia alumna, Leigh Spann graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Geography and a certificate in Atmospheric Science.
She was among the first at UGA to earn the Atmospheric Science Certificate.
Outside of work, Spann is known for her love of college football (as a devoted Georgia Bulldog fan) and her rescue dog, Pickles, who often appears in a segment called “Pickles’ Pick,” showcasing animals in need of homes.
As she prepares for this new chapter, Spann looks forward to spending more time with her husband, Dave, and their beloved dog Pickles at their Tampa home.
While viewers will undoubtedly miss her daily presence on their screens, Spann’s impact on the Tampa Bay community will be long-lasting.
