Like for like, India’s best ever Commonwealth Games performance | Commonwealth Games 2022 News
Here’s how that works out. The 101 medals in Delhi included 30 from shooting, eight from archery, seven from Greco-Roman wrestling and four from tennis. None of these disciplines were part of the 2022 Games. Subtract those from the Delhi total and what we’re left with is 52 medals including 17 gold. For a fair comparison, also take away the lawn bowls gold and silver from Birmingham, the cricket silver and the judo medals because cricket and judo were not part of the 2010 CWG and lawn bowls in 2010 did not have men’s and women’s fours, the events in which India won medals here. That reduces the 2022 tally to 55 medals and 21 gold, better on both counts than 2010.
A similar, apples to apples comparison with 2018 would mean excluding the shooting medals, which brings the tally from four years ago to 50 including 19 gold, again short of the total achieved this time.
Relative to 2010, India has lost some ground (only in terms of medals) in athletics and gymnastics, but has more than offset that through gains in badminton, table tennis, squash and to some extent weightlifting and hockey. If we compare with 2018, the big gain is in athletics (8 versus 3) and one extra medal in hockey and in weightlifting, enough to offset a slight dip in boxing and TT.
Women cricket stars eye Olympic chance after Commonwealth
Women cricketers say they would “love to go to LA” to chase Olympic glory after a strikingly successful debut at the Commonwealth Games.
It is no secret that cricket chiefs want to get the Twenty20 game on the list of Olympic sports, even as early as the Los Angeles Games in 2028, although that is a long shot. ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice said the Commonwealths had been a “fantastic 10 days of competition” in front of packed-out crowds.
England captain Nat Sciver agreed that the tournament had been a huge shot in the arm for the women’s game. “Having that new audience from the CWG where everyone’s happy to go and watch any sport is something really special. I’d love for cricket to be in an Olympics.” Australia’s Ash Gardner was struck by the impact the tournament made here. “You just have to look at how many people came out, even when England wasn’t playing,” she said.
New Zealand captain Sophie Devine said the women’s cricketers had put on a “hell of a show”
Duleep Trophy back in old format, Irani Cup slotted in calendar
The Duleep Trophy, back in the calendar in its old zonal format after three years, will kick-start the Indian domestic season from September 8 with 1500 games across all age-groups over a period of six months, the BCCI said on Monday. “The prestigious Duleep Trophy will mark the start of a full-fledged season, which will also see a return of the Irani Cup,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah was quoted as saying by media release. “The Duleep Trophy (September 8-25) will be contested between six zones (North, South, Central, West, East and Northeast) on a knockout basis,” Shah added.
The BCCI wasn’t following the zonal format for last few seasons, fielding the India Red, Blue and Green teams instead. With the zonal format making a comeback, it will have one extra zone in northeast, besides the existing five. The two multi-day tournaments will be followed by the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (October 11-November 5) and the Vijay Hazare Trophy (November 12- December 2).

Anirban Lahiri rounded off the week with a 2-under 68 in a tournament that made 20-year-old Korean Joohyung “Tom” Kim a hero. Kim added to his stature of a rising star with an emphatic five-shot victory over compatriot Sungjae Im and John Huh of the U.S. at the Wyndham Championship here on Sunday. Lahiri, whose rounds for the week included 66-67-68-68 for a 11-under total, finished tied eighth.
Morata punishes old club Juve with hat-trick in friendly
Alvaro Morata, who returned to Atletico Madrid in July after two years on loan at Juventus, scored a hat-trick in Sunday’s friendly against the Italian side in Turin. The Spain striker struck twice in the first half and then completed his treble on the hour in a match relocated to Turin from Israel because of “security concerns” in the region. Matheus Cunha added a fourth in stoppage time for Atletico, who begin their La Liga campaign against Getafe on August 15. Juventus start the Serie A season the same day at home to Sassuolo.
