Mahmoud ‘Brownie’ Ahmad ignored police warning about $1m price on his head

By the time a third brother, Ahmad “Rock” Ahmad, was charged with conspiring to import a commercial quantity of border controlled drug in 2017, the family’s role in south-western Sydney’s criminal landscape had diminished even further.

But when Brownie Ahmad returned to Australia from a holiday in Lebanon this month, someone wanted him dead.

“It was a meticulous assassination. They weren’t going to muck around with this one,” Doherty said.

“Obviously, the intention was to kill him and they were going to do that by firing as many bullets at him as they could.”

Detectives are now investigating whether his death was related to the ongoing conflict in south-western Sydney between the Hamzy and Alameddine families or a personal conflict between him and another underworld figure.

Investigators are also looking at two dark-coloured luxury cars that were found alight in Belmore and Strathfield on Wednesday night.

“There’s a long list of people that would like to see harm to Brownie,” Doherty said.

Police had warned Ahmad as recently as last week that his life was in danger and his underworld enemies were offering a $1 million bounty for killing him.

He didn’t care.

“He’s been warned in the past he was a marked man and as a result he didn’t heed those words … he was going about his normal business without a care in the world,” Doherty said.

“He continued to associate with people who are part of the criminal milieu and he did not want to hide. His life was always in danger.”

Ahmad had fled to his native Lebanon in 2016 when a warrant for his arrest was issued for the murder of Safwan Charbaji at a smash repair business in Condell Park that year.

He was arrested in 2017 when he returned to Australia, and after pleading guilty in 2020 to Charbaji’s manslaughter, was jailed. He was released on parole late last year.

On Thursday morning, the cul-de-sac where he was gunned down remained a crime scene as a series of tow trucks arrived to take a number of vehicles away for forensic analysis, including three white hatchbacks, a white sedan, a blue Audi sports car, a dark-coloured utility and a bullet-ridden white Toyota Hilux utility.
