“Man and Witch: The Dance of a Thousand Steps” sets out to be a whimsical fantasy comedy, but it doesn’t quite work.

A Tale of Missed Opportunities
At its core, “Man and Witch” aims to turn classic fairy tale upside down.
The story of a simple goatherd seeking to overcome a curse with the help of talking animals and a mysterious witch certainly has potential. However, the execution leaves much to be desired.
The film boasts an impressive cast of character actors, including Sean Astin (who voices a sheepdog narrator), Christopher Lloyd, and Michael Emerson.
Sadly, these talented performers are given minimal screen time, robbing the movie of potentially its strongest asset.
Uneven Tone and Production Issues
“Man and Witch” struggles to find the right balance between comedy and fantasy.
While it aims for the irreverent humor of “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” it often falls flat.

The pacing is inconsistent, and the visual effects are described as incomplete-looking, further detracting from the viewing experience.
On a positive note, the film’s Scottish setting provides a genuinely beautiful backdrop.
A Controversial Conclusion
The ending of “Man and Witch” surprises viewers in a way many don’t like. It’s very different from how the movie starts, which may upsets some viewers.
The climax includes what some describe as a “politically correct” resolution, featuring a same-sex kiss that may polarized audiences.
