0

This Mother’s Day, you could gift your mom with a gift of “Mother Gin,” as gin was once known.

“We need to retell the story as it should be told, every time we raise a glass to ‘Mother Gin,” we make an act of restoration,” says Dr. Nicola Nice, founder and owner of Pomp & Whimsy gin liqueur, a brand dedicated to the proper telling of women’s history.

Back in the 1700s and early 1800s, gin was known as “Mother Gin,” Nice says. It was the preferred drink of royalty, with Queen Mary and William of Orange, who did a lot to build the spirit’s popularity.

In honor of “Mother Gin,” here’s a roundup of some especially aromatic and eminently quaffable gins to gift your mother.

Pomp & Whimsy ($35)

Founded and owned by a Nice, who is herself a mother Pomp & Whimsy is a gin liqueur that exists to celebrate women and their role in the history of spirits. A reinvention of the classic gin cordial for contemporary palates, this delicious spirit boasts light citrus and exotic fruits with a dry, warm spiced finish with just the right touch of juniper. If you’re interested in learning more about the history of “Mother Gin,” Nice penned this lovely piece.

Uncle Val’s Gin ($39)

Uncle Val’s Gin was inspired by 3 Badge Beverage Corp.’s president August Sebastiani’s real Uncle Val, Zio Valerio Cecchetti. The real Uncle Val was known for his botanical concoctions that he grew in his garden in Italy. If your mom loves botanical gins, then this might be the perfect gift for her. If she has a zest for life, you might want to try Uncle Val’s Zested Gin. The company is also sponsoring a “Zest for Life” cocktail contest at unclevalsgin.com, which runs through the end of May, and if you win, you can take your mom to Italy. Uncle Val’s also makes other delicious gins including restorative and peppered.

Kentucky Wild Gin ($29.99)

New Riff Distilling’s Kentucky Wild Gin is crafted with local, wild-foraged Kentucky botanicals, which capture the native flavors of the Ohio Valley and reflects historical Kentucky gin ingredients. Twelve botanicals are distilled right in the pot, including a range of typical European gin ingredients like angelica, orris, licorice root, and three kinds of citrus. To that, New Riff adds two local, farmer-foraged wild seasonings, including a wild juniper berry and the amazing American spicebush, plus a bit of Kentucky’s state flower, goldenrod. The base spirit includes a dash of new make rye whiskey spirit, enriching the texture and lengthening the flavor. If your mom likes things with a bit more oomph, try the version aged in bourbon barrels for five to seven months ($32.99).

Hendrick’s NEPTUNIA($39.99)

If your mom loves the seaside, then perhaps she’d love a bottle of gin made with coastal herbs, seaside botanicals and a clean, citrus finish that is the new NEPTUNIA. Made by the legendary master distiller Lesley Gracie, this limited edition version of Hendrick’s also can be accompanied by a Magic-of-the-Sea Spa Kit to complete the NEPTUNIA experience.

Rehorst Gin ($30)

This craft distillery gin boasts nine different botanicals, including two unusual ones: sweet basil and Wisconsin ginseng. The two add a tango of depth to this entirely drinkable gin, making for a delicious gin cocktail or two. But if your mom doesn’t drink, then founder Guy Rehorst has you covered with his new Junipre nonalcoholic gin. Junipre ($30) shares many of the same botanicals, but it has zero alcohol.

The Botanist, $32.99

This Islay dry gin is distilled with 22 botanicals that are sustainably foraged each year from March to October from the hills, bogs and shores of Islay. It takes each seven months for professional forager James Donaldson to pick and dry each botanical, but the resulting gin is herbaceous and floral.

Bimini Coconut Gin, $38

This modern American gin distills juniper a little bit differently so that its piney flavors are separated out and the floral and fruity notes are only extracted. On top of their regular gin, Bimini Coconut Gin is fat-washed with organic, fair-trade certified coconut oil to add a subtle, coconut aroma that plays well with tropical cocktails.

Highclere Castle Gin ($42.99)

If your mom loved Downton Abbey, then consider giving her the gift of this lovely English gin, which is considered the “spirit of the real Downton Abbey.” Made with botanicals from the castle’s herb gardens, it is made by Radio Fiona Carnavon and her husband, Lord Carnarvon, the eighth earl of Carnarvon.

Glendalough Rose Gin ($34.99)

Rowdy Rowdy Rooney first created this gin to honor his mom, Rose, at his younger brother’s wedding. She had just passed away, and this was his way to have her there in spirit, literally. Rose loved her rose garden so this gin is distilled from wild Wicklow and heritage rose petals with other botanicals to create a lovely rose gin that’s perfect to give your mother.
